MSF Counter List

Hey guys! It’s been a hot minute, but I’m back, and with exciting stuff! A few days ago in my discord (which if you’re not in it, you definitely should be cough https://discord.gg/RuSENfN), I announced that myself and Doc have been working on a new project, a Counter List for this game, and today, it’s been finalized and I get to type it up and bring it to you all! Before we get started though, I’m gonna give a little breakdown of this guide - what it is, important things to know, stuff like that.

This Counter List is centered around Alliance Wars. This is the game mode where you’re really going to see the most teams and characters, so this is what we wanted to base it around. That being said, if something works in AW, it’s safe to assume it probably works in other content, too, and I think we’d probably say for the most part, that holds true. Now, to the layout of the guide!

This guide has two main categories: Hard Counters and Soft Counters. The way we’ve categorized this is pretty simple.

To be a Hard Counter, a team has to:

  • Be at least 15% less in power

  • Win 9 times out of 10

To be a Soft Counter, a team has to:

  • Be within 15% power

  • Have more than a 15% power advantage

  • Win 9 times out of 10

The “Defending” team will be in bold, and the “Offensive” counters will be bulleted. Under the name of the team, you’ll find a section that says “Team may consist of:”. Beside that, the names of the characters who are generally in these teams will be named. They won’t be in any particular order, and unless stated otherwise, the “counter” to each team can handle any set up of the characters named. You’ll also notice that some teams have “Important Notes” by them. These are placed to show 2 things: Which particularly super useful meta teams are not so great to use, and specifically for Brotherhood (this portion is mainly for Arena), how to counter a mirror match (which means similar) team. Make sense?

Now, before we really get started, we wanna say two things. Some teams are really good, and they counter almost everything. For example, Brotherhood, who literally can be used to beat anybody. We’re not going to put teams like that on every single counter option. Doing so would look like a suggestion, like “you should totally use your Brotherhood to beat a Kree team” or something, and that’s just ridiculous because it really shouldn’t happen ever. Think of each counter as a “suggestion” as opposed to an “option.” For example, Mystic Controllers are a suggestion (yay!) against Kree, whereas Brotherhood are an option (boooooo). For that reason, you might notice a lot of teams that are Hard Counters but aren’t listed. This is on purpose. On top of that, we want to stress that while what information we’re bringing you all is great and does work, that doesn’t mean someone else is doing something different that’s just as good, if not better. We’re both big theory crafting guys, and a lot of my content is based around theory crafting, so if you have something to bring to the discussion, fire away!

I’m done rambling now, let’s get started! ᕕ(ᐛ)ᕗ

Avengers

Team may consist of: Captain America, Black Widow, Quake, Vision, War Machine, Hawkeye, Iron Man, and Hulk.

Hard Counters:

  • Guardians

  • Warvengers

Soft Counters:

  • Avengers

  • Mystic Controllers

Brawlers

Team may consist of: Ms. Marvel, Spider-Man, Miles, Gamora, Deadpool, Cable, Storm, Wolverine, and Psylocke (Phoenix is not yet available.)

Hard Counters:

  • Shield

  • Guardians

  • Warvengers

Soft Counters:

  • Defenders

  • Mystic Controllers

Brotherhood
(this is mainly for arena, you won’t see them on alliance war defense often)

Team may consist of: Magneto, Juggernaut, Pyro, Mystique, Sabretooth, Venom, Carnage, Scarlet Witch, and Minn-erva.

Hard Counters:

  • Brotherhood - I personally like any combination of Magneto, Pyro, Juggernaut, Venom, Scarlet Witch, and Sabretooth. Scarlet is very good because she doubles the Blind negative status effect.

Soft Counters:

  • Defenders

Defenders

Team may consist of: Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Punisher, and Ms. Marvel.

Hard Counters:

  • Shield (with Operative)

  • Power Armor

Soft Counters:

  • Defenders (Ms. Marvel)

  • Brawlers

  • Mystic Controllers / Spider-verse Hybrids

  • Wakanda

Important notes: This is not a team I would use Brotherhood against. Defenders AI is very good compared to most teams, and they naturally semi - resist Brotherhood. Shield or Power Armor is easily your best bet.

Guardians

Team may consist of: Starlord, Rocket, Groot, Thanos, Mantis, Drax, Minn-erva, and Gamora.

Hard Counters:

  • Shield (OP)

  • Power Armor

  • Wakanda

  • Brotherhood

Soft Counters:

  • Defenders

  • Mystic Controllers

Important Notes: Brotherhood can go sideways quickly due to Groot’s cleanse.

Kree

Team may consist of: Royal Guard, Ronan, Noble, Reaper, Cyborg, Oracle, Minn-erva, and Captain Marvel.

Hard Counters

  • Warvengers

  • Defenders

Soft Counters

  • Kree

  • Mystic Controllers

  • Brawlers

Mystic Controllers

Team may consist of: Mordo, Loki, Quake, Thanos, Dr. Strange, Scarlet Witch, and Vision.

Hard Counters:

  • Mystic Controllers

  • Kree

  • Spider-verse

Soft Counters:

  • N/A - they’re generally easy to beat, defensive AI is not the best

Power Armor
(try to save for Offense, if you can)

Team may consist of: Iron Man, Rescue, Falcon, War Machine, Vision, and Hulk.

Hard Counters:

  • Brotherhood

  • Power Armor

  • Guardians

Soft Counters:

  • Shield (with Operative)

  • Warvengers

  • Wakanda

Shield

Team may consist of: Fury, Operative, Assault, Trooper, Medic, and Security.

Hard Counters:

  • Brotherhood

  • Power Armor

Soft Counters:

  • Spider-verse

  • Guardians

  • Shield (with Operative)

Spider-verse

Team may consist of: Carnage, Venom, Spider-Man, Miles, Green Goblin, Kingpin, and Scarlet Witch.

Hard Counters:

  • Defenders

  • Mystic Controllers

Soft Counters:

  • Spider-Verse

Important Notes: Shield are not useful against this team.

Technerva

Team may consist of: Starlord, Rocket, Vision, Minn-erva, Groot, Thanos, and Drax.

Hard Counters:

  • Power Armor

  • Brotherhood

Soft Counters:

  • Shield (with Operative)

  • Warvengers

  • Guardians

  • Technerva

  • Wakanda (yes, Wakanda - they particularly do best against Drax based technerva teams)

Important Notes: Similar to Guardians, Brotherhood can go sideways, quick, due to Groot (thanks for the correction, Mobilegamer!)

Ultron Teams

Team may consist of: Ultron + literally anybody.

Hard Counters:

  • Other Ultron Teams

Soft Counters:

  • Brotherhood (with Venom rather than Mystique)

Wakanda

Team may consist of: Shuri, Black Panther, Killmonger, Okoye, and M’Baku.

Hard Counters:

  • Power Armor

  • Brotherhood

Soft Counters:

  • Shield (with Operative)

  • Brawlers

Warvengers

Team may consist of: Captain America, Black Widow, War Machine, Captain Marvel, Winter Soldier, Dr. Strange, and Iron Man.

Hard Counters:

  • Power Armor

  • Brotherhood

Soft Counters:

  • Warvengers

  • Shield (OP)

Discussing the use of Power Armor:

Power Armor can shoot up extremely high. I’ve personally hit as far up as 80k against Defenders and Shield, but I’ve seen screenshots of them hitting as far up as 100k against Technerva. They’re extremely good, very adaptable to most teams, and are hands down the best all around Offensive team in War.

Concluding this, I wanted to bring up a few things. First, this guide is obviously relevant to your power level as a player. I realize that not everyone has these teams, nor does everyone have to face these teams. It is a goal of mine to always find a mix of things that not only work for people like myself, but work for people who might have only 200k collection power, too. It does have Ultron information, yes, but it also has basic teams in it, like Defenders, Avengers, and Guardians, who are all good teams and can be challenging to beat at any power level. And while we’re talking about it, this is a good time to bring it up again - what we have written down here most likely isn’t all the real (emphasis on real) hard and soft counters there are. I’m willing to bet after this is published, someone comments on the Reddit thread or in Discord rather quickly with a screenshot showing another option for consistently beating any of these teams. MSF is an evolving game with new information gained by all of us every single day, whether it be minutes old, days old or weeks old. That’s the beauty of it, and it’s one of the reasons we come back!

Alright people, it’s time to wrap this one up. Just a side note, I know a lot of people like the “infographic” style of information, but unfortunately I don’t know anything about it. It’s something I might look into, though. If you think you can help with that, definitely let me know. To my knowledge, this is the first counter list that’s been made so far, and Doc and I had a lot of fun making it. If this is something you guys like, a counter list is something we’ll probably keep up with. Hell, one day it may even get it’s own page here on the blog. A live-updated counter list, just like the T4 one. Who knows. Let me know if that’s something you’re interested in, and let us know if this helps you! Thanks for reading guys!
